How to Find Local/Internal IP Address on a Mac

Local IP Address or Internal IP Address is the number assigned to a network equipped piece of hardware by which other devices identify it. Follow the steps below:

  • Find the Mac “System Preference” from the Menu option on your device.
  • Click on the option “Network“.

There is also a technical approach to your ipconfig, which is through Mac OS X Terminal. It is a faster option for technical-minded people. Follow the steps below:

  • Launch the Terminal which is located in utilities under applications.
  • Type in the command:
ifconfig | grep inet
  • You will see something that looks like this:
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
inet6 fe80::fa1e:dfff:feea:d544%en1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5
inet 192.168.0.100 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
In this case, Your IP address is 192.168.0.100 It always comes in this format and is always found between inet and netmask which guarantees you an accuracy determining which of the numbers is your IP address.

Another command that can be used is:

ipconfig  getifaddr  en1

Which is only accessible using a wireless connection. This command does not support all Mac versions, so the prior is more reliable.

How to Find Public/External IP Address in Mac OS X

Public IP address or External IP address is an address assigned to you by your ISP (Internet service provider) that the Internet and all other computers outside your local network use to identify you.

One of the easiest ways to find your Public/External IP Address is just by type “what is my IP address” on google or visit whatismyipaddress.com this website or other similar web and checking there.
